IMT Hyderabad: corporate expectations

IMT, one of the most reputed business schools in India, is introducing its new campus in Hyderabad. With excellent infrastructure, talented faculty and IMT’s high standards, IMT Hyderabad continues the 31 year old tradition of IMT to nurture and grow world-class management leaders, starting June 2011. Industry leaders have high expectations from IMT Hyderabad and are very confident of this new venture’s imminent success.

Mr Aluri Srinivasa Rao, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley Asia private equity team expressed his belief in the visionary leadership of
Dr. V. Panduranga Rao.
He is sure this institute will succeed. Sharing his views on the generic nature of today’s MBA program, he said, “An MBA education is no doubt very generic. The generic part of management education helps in understanding and appreciating the interaction between different functions and disciplines. So, it is a must for a certain period of time. It’s good to see that in addition to offering a mix of courses to first year students in the programme, IMT Hyderabad provides students with opportunities to integrate their learning in multiple areas by way of Management Projects.”

Appreciating the idea of summer internship program by IMT Hyderabad, he further said “The business schools can help students in identifying their focus areas as well as industry of interest quite early in the programme. If this can be done in the second semester itself, the students can take up focused projects during their course work as well as during their Summer Internship Programme. I must say that the 14-week-long summer internship at IMT Hyderabad is a very good idea. The longer students work in the industry on a defined project, the better it is.”

Mr Rao then highlighted the importance of gaining experience in capital market to deal with tough market competition. “While the financial lab and trading room that IMT Hyderabad is starting is definitely a great beginning and a step forward, I would further suggest that students be encouraged to get some hands-on actual trading experience.”

When Mr P K Sahgal, Senior Brand Services Director, Lintas India, heard the news that IMT Hyderabad is setting up its campus, he was happy. And he was relieved. Because he deeply felt the need for a high quality management institute in Hyderabad. According to him IMT Hyderabad is welcomed into Hyderabad by every aspiring manager in and around the city. On the question about the generic nature of today’s management education he explained the limitations MBA colleges face. However, he congratulated IMT Hyderabad for the institute’s thoughtful addition of offering students a spectrum of electives in nine streams.

“It’s good that IMT Hyderabad offers over 100 electives in nine different streams and takes a cafeteria approach where a student can choose electives from any of the streams. I’m sure this will encourage a multi-disciplinary approach and help students satisfy their diverse learning interests,” he said.

Being an senior level advertising professional, Saghal has his finger firmly on the pulse of the ad world. His suggestions come from years of experience in this fast paced industry where brands rise and shine or flounder and sink. “For the advertising industry in particular, important courses would be those related to consumer behavior, branding and integrated marketing communications. That IMT Hyderabad is offering elective courses on creativity and innovation and in digital marketing is a good move. This is the need of the hour. I would advise them to focus on the two kinds of social media marketing — one that is owned by an organization and one that is owned by others. In addition to the relevant courses, IMT Hyderabad could also work on developing curiosity and a sense of inquiry among students and concentrate on their written and oral communication skills as well,” he suggested.

Vijay Pasupulati, currently VP, Winzest, was previously VP at Goldman Sachs. He has high expectations from the MBA graduates of IMT Hyderabad. “I would expect an IMT Hyderabad graduate to be well-grounded with the requisite management knowledge and have a good understanding of the industrial environment. I would like to see the academic rigor reflect in their knowledge and the practical exposure to the industry reflect in their better understanding of the world. I also expect the graduate to be a quick learner, open to new ideas, a team player, armed with strong analytical skills,” he said.

Innovative teaching methods, handpicked faculty, far sighted leadership and the thoughtfully created campus of IMT Hyderabad are building blocks for the comprehensive management education the institute offers. With freshness of thoughts, a futuristic approach, and decades of IMT experience, IMT Hyderabad is ready to fulfill and exceed industry expectations. Because IMT Hyderabad is about to set new standards in management education.

Kingmakers are as Important as Kings at IMT Hyderabad

When you are at a stage in your life where the most crucial decision is the selection of the right educational institute, the easiest and the most accurate way of making a good decision is learning about its faculty. This aspect of making an education-related decision is particularly important when the education under question is, management studies. When there are so many institutes claiming to offer so many services and facilities that are difficult to compare, you can easily compare them based on the experiences, track records, and teaching methods of their faculty members. For the same reason, it is implicit that a newer business school in the reputed series of IMT B-schools, IMT Hyderabad boasts of offering educational services by its several gifted academicians and renowned management gurus.

In addition, the neck-to-neck competition in the modern corporate world requires an ongoing effort in the direction of research and development of new educational tools and techniques that can become baseline for delivering quality education. This is why IMT Hyderabad employs some of the best management talents available in the country and abroad.

Following the similar lines, Dr. Vishwanathan Iyer, an associate professor at IMT Hyderabad explain the unique yet proven distribution of sources of learning during a student’s course of education as follows,

“| AcharyAt Padam Adatte, Padam Shishyah Swamedhaya |
|| Sa-Brahmacharibhyah Padam, Padam Kalakrame Na Cha ||”

In his simple English words, it means, “A student learns a quarter from the teacher, a quarter from his/her own intelligence, a quarter from fellow students, and the rest in the course of time.”

Experienced management faculty members who have been involved and contributed to the evolution of interesting teaching styles that work, are handpicked to add value to the education system at IMT Hyderabad. For instance, Dr. Nitin Gupta, associate professor in disciplines such as Consumer Behaviour, Brand Management and Strategic Marketing Management, Integrated Marketing Communication, Strategic Brand Management and Foundation Courses in Marketing says, “I believe that learning should always be an enjoyable experience. Students will gain much more knowledge if they enjoy what they are doing. As a student of social sciences, one should always relate the contents of the text book to the contemporary situation in the corporate environment. It is not rote-learning but the application of knowledge that builds the foundation of a successful manager. A teacher’s job is to act as an enabler in this whole process of learning.”

With its qualified and experienced management professors, adequate infrastructure, and a trust earned over decades in imparting quality management education, IMT Hyderabad appears to soon-to-become a factory of excellent management professionals that takes raw talent as input and shapes and polishes them to impress the world their unmatched and flawless sheen.

Choose a Future-ready MBA at IMT Hyderabad

If you are one of those who have constantly wished to see their names in the list of respectable management professionals at some point in future, you’re possibly yet to reach the right destination for your management studies. Of course, there are almost countless management institutes in almost every part of the country today. However, the harsh reality is that many of the recently mushroomed management institutes do not prepare their students with even half of the skills required to shape their career in the fast-moving and result-oriented corporate sector of today.

This is why it makes sense to choose an MBA course only from the most reputed institutes, such as IMT, IIMs, XLRI and few more. In the series of the leading management institutes, IMT Hyderabad is the newest offering from the reputed chain of the IMT B-schools, IMT Ghaziabad, IMT Nagpur, and IMT Dubai. With its state of the art campus spread over 30 acres of lush green land, the institute claims to have few gifted academicians and management teachers for ensuring the best possible level of management education.

It does not need an explanation to understand the importance of a world-class infrastructure and facilities when it comes to ‘shaping careers of youth in a futuristic fashion’. This realization has resulted in an extensive effort in building the infrastructure that can ensure that the students wouldn’t ever feel themselves lagging behind the most renowned management institutions in India and abroad. The founders of IMT Hyderabad realize that the vision of bringing out the best in the promising youth of India by means of an extensive and scientific study methodology can be made possible only if the best facilities, administration, and infrastructure-related demands of education are met at each and every step.

Of course, dreamy eyes of an MBA aspirant can foresee the possibilities of their dreams come true only if the chosen business school is adequately equipped with what it takes to make a world-class management professional.  This is why a major part of making of a great business school goes into the detailed planning of infrastructural requirements, consideration of the most proven teaching methodologies and the most experienced management faculty. Thankfully, foundation of IMT Hyderabad has been laid considering the above factors as their building blocks in order to ensure a future-ready education for the next generation of management experts.

Aluri Srinivasa Rao, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley on expectations from MBA grads…

Aluri Srinivasa Rao, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley

As Managing Director, Aluri Srinivasa Rao is a senior member of the Morgan Stanley Asia private equity team and runs the group’s private equity investments in India. Rao was Director of Private Equity at ICICI Venture and one of the senior private equity professionals on the team. He has led numerous landmark private equity investments particularly in the healthcare sector.

Prior to joining ICICI Venture in 2002, Mr. Rao held various senior positions in a number of leading Indian pharmaceutical companies, including Ranbaxy and Natco Pharma. He has over 18 years of organisational building and corporate experience in India, the UK and USA. He is a graduate of BITS, Pilani, and a Sloan Fellow from the London Business School.

“I am very happy to hear that IMT Hyderabad starts its operations this year. I have known Dr. V. Panduranga Rao for many years and I am confident that under his visionary leadership, the business school will achieve great heights.”

# Do you feel management education today is too generic?

“An MBA education is no doubt very generic. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to that and there are ways of getting around the disadvantages. The generic part of management education helps in understanding and appreciating the interaction between different functions and disciplines. So it is a must for a certain period of time. It’s good to see that in addition to offering a mix of courses in the first year of the programme, IMT Hyderabad provides students with opportunities to integrate their learning in multiple areas by way of Management Project.

“While an MBA education is generic, the students tend to find their own ways of making their learning focused. The business schools can aid this process by helping the students identify their focus areas as well as industry of interest quite early in the programme. The school should have internal mechanisms to help students develop a clear idea. If this can be done in the second semester itself, the students can take up focused projects during their course work as well as during their Summer Internship Programme. Where a student does his/her summer internship should be related to what he/she finally wants to do. At this point I must say that the 14-week-long summer internship at IMT Hyderabad is a very good idea. The longer the students work in the industry on a defined project, the better it is.”

# What can management institutes do to ensure that students are prepared for the real workplace and world?

“Extensive interaction and input from industry is an absolutely essential requirement for students to be prepared for the workplace. Involvement of practitioners by way of teaching assignments, seminars, meetings, problem-solving sessions, interviews, projects and so on is what a management institute should aim for. Awareness about the trends and directions of growth is another aspect that the institutes and students need to consistently work on. Mergers and acquisitions, the corporate side as well as the investment side of business, and innovation are interesting areas which most companies across sectors have their focus on.”

# What do you think the management student of today needs to be most aware of if they are looking to start their career in capital markets?

“Some experience in the capital market is absolutely essential. While the financial lab and trading room that IMT Hyderabad plans to start is definitely a beginning and a step forward, I would further suggest that students be encouraged to get some hands-on actual trading experience. Also close interactions with four-five traders who have done well for themselves would help the students review and revisit the approach for themselves.”
